Jillian, you're quite welcome, I'm happy to help out spirited cycle chicness in any oppressive car culture :).

It's hard for me to know where to start on the falling bit. True, I haven't heard of any fatal accidents with children on bikes in Amsterdam ever since I moved here in 1993, and dutch mothers have a head start that goes back generations, obviously. In your case, you're still adjusting on your own (it's not like you're going to make the same mistake twice, right?). On your own, you know what areas are not so bike friendly whatsoever and which are. In the same way you will calculate what would be a good route to bring Ellie along. Once you do, you'll automatically sense your mother instinct take over of your cycle chic urges :).
Ergo, I can give you pointers and words of encouragement, as I do recognize and respect the difference in cycling pedigree, but like my mom said when I was little (no pun): "You still want to ride your bike, right? Then stop crying, get back up and get going!" (there's Dutch no-nonsense/pragmatism for ya)

But..since my crash I am a little nervous about a seat without protective support around the body. What do you think? Do you think that because Amsterdam is a much more bike friendly, the instance of child-related injuries is lower and those seats are therefore safer there?

Shoot - I sold my bobike mini about a month ago. It had a blue and black plaid pattern. But you couldn't see it in pictures because there was always a darn kid in the way.
